The specification was for shutters using 89 mm slats and concealed push rods. The great thing is that they look as good when fully opened back to the walls as they do when closed.

What it  shows very clearly is that shutters look great from outside the home as well as inside. The client has also created and used to great effect,  the super stylish window boxes and planters  to enhance an already elegant facade.

The shutters are installed on typical Georgian  sash windows and the ‘Tier on Tier’ configuration  perfectly complements the window proportions. The specification  was for 64mm slats incorporating central push rods, which we think suggests a more traditional shutter style and the colour is  Farrow and Ball inspired ‘Biscuit’

There are three styles of panel to choose from:  Shaker, Raised or Double Raised.

We were asked to provide shutters for the master bedroom, as our clients were looking for a greater degree of privacy as well as sound and light insulation.

Since the span is so big, we specified track shutters, as the only reliable way of supporting the huge hardwood panels. The slat size was in our largest 114m, using concealed push rods for a minimal effect. The colour, ‘Cloud White’ was used as a complement to the window frames and the limestone flooring.

The resulting installation carried out by both of our installers working together shows what is possible on the very largest of windows.

These days, many people are looking to maximise space within their homes rather than move. Developing a loft into a useable room is  a great answer and adds  value to the home too.It could be a bedroom, home office or even a  ‘den’.Velux windows come into their own within these rooms and are often the only means of achieving natural light.  Most people think that pull down fabric blinds are the only answer… wrong!

Shutters look fabulous and bring a massive sense of style to any loft conversion. They also enable great light control and don’t cost the earth either.

1) Match the shutters to the window
We always try to match the shutter layout to your window layout.  Look at where the window design has wooden glazing bars or separate sections of glass and where possible match the shutter design to these.  This way when you look through the open louvre blades you will not see unsightly lumps of wood or handles!

2) Match the shutter and window colour
Match the colour of the shutters to your window frames, not the walls or floor covering.  Whilst you may wish to change the décor of a room in time, with careful consideration at the outset you can avoid the need to replace shutters.  Look at the window frames and windowsills – most are white irrespective of the colour of the rest of the room. This is why most customers choose white shutters. The question is which white! We have about six different shades

3) Match the shutters to the property
Sometimes it’s all too easy to focus on the single room you are decorating and neglect the bigger picture of the view from outside.  If you stand on the outside of your property and look at all the windows as a whole, imagine if all windows matched.  So whether your budget extends to doing all windows at the same time or maybe in stages, lower level first – upper level later, consider matching all the windows of your house with the same colour and style of interior window shutters. That visual impact not only looks great, it also adds value to your property!

4) Go large on louvres!
Choosing larger louvre blades and wider shutters will provide the option of maximizing light into any room, without the need to fully open or fold-back the shutters.  The larger size is particularly good for leaded-light style of windows!  The majority of customers choose the medium-size louver blades, depending on the size of their window, as this allows plenty of light in while making the window look larger.
